Frequently Asked Questions
Is Homebirth Safe?Yes, it is safe. Studies have shown that homebirth with professional midwives in low-risk pregnancies and healthy full-term babies can be just as safe, if not safer, than hospital birth.
What about the mess? This is a common concern. Amazingly, homebirth isn't that messy. The supply list has many items to minimize mess and help make clean up easy. Most people won't be able to tell you just gave birth in your home by the time your midwives leave.
What is the different between a midwife, a doula, and a monitrice?A midwife is a primary care provider trained in comprehensive care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
A doula is a trained support person for pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. They have no medical training.
A monitrice is a mix of both doula and midwife. They offer mostly support but also provide basic medical evaluation, like blood pressure, fetal heart tones, and cervical checks. A monitrice is a good option for families wanting to labor at home as long a possible before heading to the hospital or birth center.
I'm interested in waterbirth. Do you offer them?Yes, we do offer waterbirth. Water is a great way to deal with pain during labor. Some families choose to give birth in the birth pool and others will get out. We rent birth pools for those interested in having a waterbirth.
What are my options for pain relief? While there is no option for epidural or other pharmaceutical pain relief, many women report that they manage labor just fine in the comfort of their home because of the ability to move around, labor and birth in the position of their choice, and eat, drink and rest as needed. Midwives have other comfort measures to help with pain relief. Water, massage, sterile water injections, TENs therapy, are a few.
Who can come to my homebirth? You can invite anyone you would like. One of the best parts of homebirth is being able to share it with those of your choice, older children, grandparents, aunts, etc. Your midwife will help you prepare those you want to be part of your big day.
Will insurance cover my homebirth? Some private insurance might reimburse all or some of the fee. We have a insurance biller that can find out more about your plan. We also accept most NM medicaid plans (not Molina). We are committed to making homebirth accessible for all families who desire one. We offer payment plans, pre-payment discounts, and sliding fees for those with a financial need. Contact us to set up a free consultation appointment and discuss your options.
