Our Student
Midwives
At Mammana we care about the future of midwifery. Midwifery has traditionally been passed on through apprenticeship. Student midwives need real chances to learn, good mentors, hands-on experience, and pay when possible. By supporting students and building better pathways into the profession, we can help create a strong midwifery workforce in New Mexico.
If you are interested in an apprenticeship, please email your CV/resume to clinic@mammanamidwifery.com
Rebecca Borrego, Primary Student
My name is Rebecca Borrego, I am a mother of 2 amazing adult daughters, a farmer and caretaker of fruit trees in beautiful Santa Cruz, NM. I am also a massage therapist/sobadora and doula.
I graduated from NNMCC in 1991 with an Associate Degree in Radiography and from the Boulder School of Massage in 1993. I apprenticed with the late venerated Espanola Valley sobador “Cheesy”. And worked alongside him from 1994-99. I am a Spinning Babies Aware Practitioner ™, Cranio-Sacral therapist and studied many bodywork and healing modalities over the span of my 35 years as a licensed massage therapist. I enjoy live music, dancing, writing poetry and creating small handcrafted works of beauty.
My connection to birth work began at age eight when I instinctively supported my oldest sister as she expressed breast milk for her premature hospitalized baby. Standing guard over her while she persevered the manual hand pump, this left a lasting impression on me and planted an early seed of advocacy for mothers and babies.
That seed grew when I became a mother myself. My first birth experience and my desire to honor the natural birth process deepened my commitment to support families during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum.
I became a doula in 1997, initially serving my sisters, friends and massage clients. My path to midwifery expanded in 2012 when I was invited to move my private massage practice into a Midwifery Center in Taos, NM where I began my training and working as an assistant to licensed and professional homebirth midwives.
I continue to cultivate a love of plant medicine through growing and wild harvesting plants, including remedios rooted in my family’s tradition.
I am currently in my 3rd year as a student midwife.
I am passionate about birth work and draw wisdom from the cycles of life through my roles as a mother, sister, relative, community member, acequia parciante, born and raised in the Española valley on Tewa land. I am dedicated to creating safe birth spaces, providing compassionate and culturally grounded care while nurturing connection, dignity, equity, and support for all birthing people.

Aidan Gonzales, Assist Student
Aidan Gonzales was born and raised in New Mexico, in the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho area. She has always wanted to work in healthcare, but found herself more drawn to the parts of healthcare where she gets to witness new life and experiences that are meaningful and fulfilling. Birth and midwifery stood out to her because she loves being able to be part of one of the most memorable and positive moments in a mother’s life.
Aidan chose to pursue midwifery specifically, because she wanted to build more personal relationships with the mothers that she works with and to be able to support them throughout their whole pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. She believes mothers should have the information they need to understand their options and make informed decisions about their own care. Aidan wants to be someone who can listen to each mother, understand what is important to them, and help them feel supported and confident in the choices that they make.
One of the things she loves most about midwifery is getting to see the true process of birth. Aidan appreciates being able to support mothers through labor while allowing their bodies to work through the natural process of birth with little to no unnecessary intervention when it is safe to do so. She believes that the natural birth process should be respected and valued, while also recognizing when additional care or intervention is needed. Her goal is to be a steady support person, advocate, and listener that mothers can lean on throughout this new chapter in their lives.
Aidan has been a student midwife since February 2026 and is currently attending the National College of Midwifery (NCM), an online program based in Taos, New Mexico, while working toward becoming a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). Her current training and certifications include CPR, Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP), phlebotomy, IV therapy, and midwife assistant training. She is grateful for the opportunity to continue to expand her knowledge and experience as she works toward becoming a midwife.
Outside of midwifery, Aidan enjoys reading, spending time with the people she cares about, getting outdoors, exploring new things, dancing, singing, and doing things that uplift her soul. She is excited to continue growing in her knowledge and skills and to become the kind of midwife who makes a meaningful difference in the lives of the mothers and families she has the opportunity to serve.
